Walking in K-K

Went for a nice stroll through Kailua-Kona town. Okay, I'll tell the truth, my car was at the mechanic to fix my broken A/C so I had no choice but to walk around town. It was still a nice, albeit hot and humid, day to stroll through town. Here's the view back to Kailua Bay from the seawall fronting Hard Rock Cafe Kona.

As for my car, an A/C tubing has a hole worn through it and the dealer's computer was down so my mechanic could not see if they had the part. Looks like I'm gonna be without A/C for awhile. Not that I'm an A/C snob, I drove for years in my Ford that had A/C without turning it on. But it really helps to have that to defog the windshield while driving in all the rain we've been having.

You gotta admit that there are some folks who like our bigger broadsheet newspaper.

Actually I've heard it both ways from folks but I think everyone is getting used to it and seeing the benefits of having a broadsheet paper. Sure makes it easier to pull those sections out for everyone to read, or sleep on.

Hey! I am the press and I am driving, to where?

Saw a bunch of these signs on old Mamalahoa Hwy. in Holualoa and they were directing down Hualalai Road to the Queen Kaahumanu Hwy. I don't know what they were for but they were down by the afternoon. Did I miss some kind of press tour?

The cat pack

Like I said in a post a few months ago our parking lot is a cat ranch. Here the feral cats along with mongoose feast on cat food poured in a line by one of those crazy cat people. These folks should take all of these cats home if they don't mind the cat poop, dumpster diving, yowling at night and cat spray on cars. They can take the mongoose too while they're at it. The lady delivering the cat food has upgraded to a minivan or maybe it's a different person that did the moped cat food deliveries.

Speaking of eating I've been visiting a local blog with great photos and descriptions. She who eats will make you hungry, there's no way around it. Now could we get her to write/photograph for our paper? I've added her to the links on the right.

Crime and publishment

Carolyn prepares to set an example of photographers missing their deadlines. Actually my tennis racquet, and not my bum, is a prop for a photo we were workng on.

I did finally update the POTD for August 23rd. Click on the link to make a beeline to it.

Dr. Angus?

North Hawaii New editor Abbie, left, went with me on assignment on a cattle ranch in Waimea. With a few alfalfa blocks in hand the cattle crowd over to the rancher like he was handing out treats at a Westminster dog show.

Howl at the moon

Twilight at Parker Ranch Center. No I didn't go into Starbucks but thought it was kind of pretty with the moon and you could see the observatories on Mauna Kea. You can't really see them in this tiny photo so if you click on the image above you'll get the Venti sized image (that's 'bucks-speak for large).

Check out the rack on that one

Racks and racks of newspapers.

Just from looking in the rack's windows, which would you buy?

This was at Waikoloa Village Market where there has been a little battle with the folks who fill these racks as to which one is closest to the market's door. The order from the door to furthest away: WHT daily, WHT Sunday, Tiser, Trib, NHN. Past NHN is a realtor's freebie. I've heard that the vendor who fills the Tiser rack moves it closer to the door, then our person moves it back down the line and so forth.

The Kawaihae Crawl

Traffic was crawling up the snaky Kawaihae Road up to Waimea. Couldn't see that far ahead due to the monster behinds of these trucks plus the many little hills in the way.

It ain't no fun in first gear the first half of Kawaihae Road.

Finally halfway up the road a reprieve as the big flatbed with the dozer on it pulls onto the shoulder to let a long convoy of cars past. Ah the smell of diesel fume exhaust.

My air-conditioner in my car is dead, not sure if it just needs a charge or something mechanical is wrong, but with the windows rolled down I get all those vehicle fumes to get brain damaged on.

Saw this honey bee flittering around the flowers in a yard while on assignment. I'm just posting this image six days late, but better late than never I guess.

Rolling Stone Radio, not the group...the magazine

I've been listening to Rolling Stone Radio lately and like their playlist. I usually listen to KEXP out of Tacoma, Washington and still do often but RS's The Hot List playlist is pretty good. Try it, good stuff.

Cool Camera, CoolPix 4500

I've shot many blog photos with this camera and have even done lots of photos for the newspaper with it but I'm going to be selling it soon, probably on eBay. An excellent camera but I wanted something smaller which is one of the big reasons I got the Canon s500. This CoolPix is still a fairly small camera and easily fit in my cargo pockets on my pants legs. I have really missed getting low and high angle shots with this camera since the screen swivels and the zoom when shooting videos, both key features that the Canon lacks.

Stay tuned, I'll post info when I do list it on eBay should anyone be interested in buying it.

The sun also sets

Not much of a photo, sunset from Waimea looked like a fiery spot in the distance. Got to see Peter Pan at Parker Theater, a fun show, lots of action and great sets for the little amphitheater.

Adventure Day South-East

I know this is late but better than never. Click on the above image to open a gallery of images from our trip to South Point, Green Sands, Punaluu Black Sands and Volcano. We did go through Hilo, Hamakua, Waimea and back to Kona circumnavigating the island. Thank-goodness for for fake cappaccino in Waimea, the sugar and caffine kept me awake driving back to Kona.

Click on the image above to play the video. Maile enjoys the steam vent in Volcanoes National Park where it was chilly after sunset. Some crazy kids were fishing change out of the vent for some gas money to get home. I guess to their credit they also cleared the trash out of the vent and it was better than being a misfit breaking into cars and for cash. Highly not recommened that anyone do this as folks have been known to slip into the vent and been steamed alive like so many crab legs.

Celllphone Shooter

Maile lets Tony chimp a photo taken with my cellphone as Ginger (aka Little Girl) enjoys some quality lap time.

Maile works the camera controls on the phone.

Got together with Maile and Tony and watched I shot Andy Warhol. I think we all agreed that the acting was good, Stephen Dorff as Candy Darling was interesting to watch, he might have actually been the most attractive 'women' in the movie, well then again Jill Hennessy was in it but had a small role. The movie was kind of a drag, no pun intended, as scenes tended to go on longer than needed at points but it probably captured what things were like at the time of the avant-garde art scene of the '60s.

Funny, seeing Andy Warhol at the parties at The Factory reminded of going to parties at Bob Regli's house with Bob sitting around observing the scene. Regli was the head of Kona Kai Coffee Farms in Kona, quite a strange tale for that one, thanks for the great parties Bob wherever you are.
