How can I refuse?

Got this friend request on Facebook. It must be real right? What church is she a pastor of?

*sniff* something’s rank here, must be me

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

Out of curiosity I entered my blog address into a site called BlogRank and strangely enough it ranked in the top 10 for Hawaii under the ‘ultimate rank’ category.

I think I owe it to the way these crazy ranking programs work. I used to post a photo a day which is why this blog has so many posts and that helped to drive the ranking up. Plus I have a few tutorials on the blog so people find this site through various links. Note that you won’t find a link to this blog from my top level domain page.

I’m ranked like #6 for number of pages posted. I only need to suddenly post 1,400 new entries or so to take the #5 spot. Of course this is considering if the #5 blogger drops dead, ends up in prison without internet access or qualifies as a conestant on Survivor as I doubt their numbers will stay frozen.

I’d need to post 55K entries to get to the top spot on number of pages posted. That ain’t going to happen.

Fellow Big Island blogger and radio personality Darrin Carlson and myself at the Hawaii Community College Earth Fair 2009 at the UH-Hilo campus. No he didn’t interview me, thank-goodness, but he did some broadcasting and tweet-casting from the fair. In the ‘old days’ we’d call this guy plugged-in but I think he was mostly wireless today.

Damon is looking for FBI recruits. That would actually be From Big Island bloggers for his new website. The guy in the back is cooking up a ton of steaks for the steak-fry at the event.

What’s in a name?

I guess I should state for the record that Hawaii247.org is NOT a blog.

Yes it uses a CMS, Content Management System, (i.e. WordPress, Drupal, PHPWebSite, etc) to publish but Hawaii247.org contains content by many authors. Typically a blog is used by an individual to post things, most popularly a personal journal, a photo album, increasingly often mixed media of text, graphics, photos, audio, video, etc. We have Dave Winer to thank for much of the weblog’s heritage along with podcasting and CMS such as Frontier (man, I tried really hard to learn Frontier long ago).

What you’re reading now, yeah THIS stuff, THIS is a blog. Nobody else is going to write in this space except for me, or if someone does hopefully they’ll identify themselves.

I just wanted to clear that up. Note that CMS can be used for many wonderful things, not just blogs and not just news websites. People have been using them as storefronts, novels, tutorials, community and corporate websites, it’s endless.

So when you see someone using the tools that are popular with bloggers just remember, not everything is a blog. Don’t confuse the tool with the end product. After all, I think of the countless times I’ve used a ‘rice paddle’ to dish ice cream into a bowl, yet I wouldn’t call Bunny Tracks ice cream ‘rice.’

News sans-paper

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008

Yes, it’s true, I’ve started a news site. Hawaii247.org This is just the beginning and I hope it can serve the community with the news and information it needs.

In this day and age of the internet it just doesn’t make sense to ship in tons of paper and ink to Hawaii, truck it around to sell, transport it to the dump or recycle center and possibly ship it off again to make maybe more newspapers or maybe toilet paper which the internet can’t replace. That’s a lot of fuel burned and time for people to spend dealing with it.

Even as an employee of a newspaper I saw the writing on the wall (the virtual wall) and the publishing industry needs to change. Newsroom employees are being laid-off from their jobs across the country. News coverage is shrinking and the community is the loser.

News isn’t wine, it doesn’t get better with time. Hopefully the site can provide the news you need in a timely manner, something paper news can’t do. We’re still working out the bugs, still churning up sawdust as we build the site. Many I’ve talked to are excited for it. Hawaii247.org is getting mentioned in the blogosphere:

Friend and photojournalist Mark Hancock says that this is the time for renaissance journalism. I too think this is a time of revival for a profession that has been absorbed by just a few big corporations, in the case of the Big Island, mostly one big corporation.

Things are just starting and I hope we can support the community and in return it can help to support us in our effort. The economy has made things difficult for all of us and we wish the best for others who have also made the Big Island their home. We’re in the same canoe, let’s paddle together. imua
