Buffalo on a bun

Friday, July 16th, 2010

A Buffalo Jalapeno Cheese Brat with onions, extra jalapenos, pepper jelly, relish and some carb loaded sides.

Not cheap for these gormet dogs. Might have to try Santa's favorite, Reindeer Monster Polish next.

The Hot Dog Guy and myself. At the Y-Split of Hwy 132 and Pohoiki Road. He says he's there every weekday. He kinda looks like he could be Cowman's cousin.

I try to patronize local food vendors if I eat out for some local support. I’ve had the corn guy and chicken guy’s offerings from Hwy 130 near the Eagles in Kea‘au for nice dinner fixings. I kept driving past this Hot Dog Guy along the highway and decided it was the day to give him a try.

I went for the Buffalo Jalapeno Brat with all the fixin’s loaded on. He fired up the gas bbq grill to make a pretty good dog. The brat was tasty with some snap to it. Could have been a bit hotter but I should have put more jalapenos on it so that’s my fault.

I asked him about the Pizza Dude (they’re all dudes right?) next to the corn and chicken dude on Hwy 130 and HDG said the pizza was pretty good with a spicy sauce. I think Pizza Dude is not around while school is out, maybe he’ll come back. Not sure if he’s one of the guys at Makuu Farmer’s Market.

And for those with big appetites there’s always the VFW Post 3830 all you can eat breakfast for $5 in Nanawale Estates. Next breakfst is Sunday (July 18) with SOS on the menu.

Teshima’s North & Red Velvet Cake

Monday, February 1st, 2010

Tempura, Teshima-style.

Had the annual Teshima’s birthday lunch but this time instead of driving to Kona we cooked it up ourselves in Waimea. Not all of it shown in these photos as I was too busy eating. Tempura purple sweet potato, carrots, yellow squash, zucchini, onion, shrimp, namasu, rice, miso soup, dipping sauce, green tea and something not served at Teshima’s, red velvet cake.

This was a ton of food and I had to take a break before the cake. Next year we’re gonna have to invite more people or cook less food. I think I ate enough tempura to last me a year…unless I drop by Sekiya’s. I usually get the teriyaki beef & tempura combo at Teshima’s. The tempura we made came out pretty darn close if not the same as Teshima’s.

New favorite Thai food place

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

Had food at Sukothai restaurant again in Pahoa. Food takes awhile to be prepared but it’s worth it, yummy stuff. I’m worried though that they may not stay in business long as there was nobody eating there when I dropped by to pick-up my takeout order, though two other people were ordering/waiting for their takeout food.

I wrote a review on Yelp to hopefully help them out as I’m afraid folks heading down to Kalapana to view the lava flow and such drive right past Pahoa town.

Here’s there menu. Drop by there and the other businesses in Pahoa and keep the bucks in Hawaii.

Here’s the menu. Sorry, no photos, food was scarfed down.

Krispy Kreme Pineapple Fritters

Krispy Kreme Pineapple Fritters

Visited Maui for the day and of course one of the first thing you see after leaving the airport is Krispy Kreme donuts. I stopped for the $0.05 cup of coffee of course. Okay, I went touristy and had a pineapple fritter. I’d have to say I prefer the apple fritter at Waikoloa Village Market which has a higher oil content.

More donuts.

I must admit that having a cup of coffee for a nickle and free WiFi this isn’t a bad place to stop in. Take the bench seat facing the kitchen next to the window, there’s a power plug there for your laptop.

Fran's Island Grill Paukiki Chicken

Fran's Island Grill Paukiki Chicken

For lunch I Yelped on my iPhone and found Fran’s Island Grill in Wailuku. I almost went for the chicken carbonara special but decided to try the Paukiki Chicken. This is a marinated, lightly breaded, deep fried chicken breast with a garlic chili dipping sauce, a couple scoops of rice and one of mac salad. Good stuff, not diet food and it takes them 20 minutes to prepare.

I didn’t take many photos this night. You really needed a 10 and some Alien Bees. So staffers and even some ex-staffers and friends came out for my farewell get-together. Okay, the food and brew probably would have had them enjoying the night anyway but at least my escape from the paper stood as a good excuse.

It was fitting that this was held at the Kona Brew Pub since it’s the property where I started work for WHT 18 years ago. The newsroom, production, advertising, business and administration offices were next door in the building which houses Firestone. The Brew Pub building was WHT’s printing press building back then. I think most would agree that it’s a much better use for the building.

Who knows, maybe one day when everything goes digital they can turn the current pressroom into another Brew Pub. That would sure make it convenient for employees, though OSHA might not like it.

Lots of dots but where’s the com, net and org?

Spending a day shopping for hardware at Home Depot in Honolulu builds up an appetite, or at least that’s my excuse. So I decided to test out an iPhone App I have called Yelp that uses my location to make suggestions for places to eat or drink nearby. Yelp suggested Sugoi only about a block away.

I bet all the three dot reporters eat here

I got there just before the lunch crowd started piling in, here some highway guys stop for lunch. You see lots of folks in some kind of matching uniform come in there to eat on their lunch break.

One constant in the Yelp reviews was talk of the garlic chicken there so that’s what I ordered. If you must view the full menu click here as they serve breakfast and have bentos.

Garlic Spicy Chicken Plate

Garlic Spicy Chicken Plate

Not exactly the most healthy of meals. Deep fried boneless chicken pieces with a spicy garlic sauce mixture poured over it. I could have had brown instead of white rice and not gotten mac salad but I decided to get the baseline standard. The sauce is not overly garlicky, sweet and Sugoi’s sells it in bottles in case you have to make this at home. Overall a thumbs-up. Plenty of food, lots of tables in the air-conditioned place, self-serve soda fountain.
