Unctuous BP originally said the oil spill was at a rate of 42,000 gallons a day and still refuses to allow scientists to perform tests to determine the rate.

Unctuous Numbers
Thursday, June 10th, 2010Hey Google, have you ever heard of Google Maps?
Sunday, March 28th, 2010This is the map Google has on its blog talking about its experimental fiber optic network. You’d think they would have had a better map by using Google Maps. The Big Island looks kind of funky.
Instant, No Hassle Connections
Monday, March 8th, 2010That’s the motto for the group that created the USB connector.
I guess they never had to deal with actually finding and plugging in the right USB cord to connect or charge a device. And for each of those below there are corresponding male and female connectors. Such a hassle to have so many cords and power supplies just because devices have different USB connectors.
Can’t we just have SuperSpeed Wireless USB and inductive charging already?
The Falcon has landed – or maybe not
Thursday, October 15th, 2009Like others I wasted some time today watching the allegedly skyward Falcon riding in the saucer balloon. I had the suspicion that he was probably just hiding somewhere and not up in the balloon. The live video was seen worldwide.
Had six year-old Falcon popped out of the balloon after the landing surely it would have rated higher than Beyonce’s video as the best ever.
Stay alert! That cellphone call, Twitter or text message could be your last
Monday, July 6th, 2009On my way into Hilo this afternoon there was a gal in a white Chevy Blazer weaving all over the road, and I mean really weaving. I caught the tail end of her winding drive on video. She was reckless by mostly driving on the center line and veering onto the shoulder (good thing both lanes were going in the same direction).
I was able to get close enough to see a license plate to call it into the cops, I called them twice as all of a sudden she went left to go onto Kilauea Avenue. I thought for sure she was going to plow into oncoming lanes of traffic headed south.
I didn’t see which way she went after that and I don’t think the cops did either, but they do have her license number so I think they’ll be contacting her.
I don’t care how good of a driver you readers are, you have to be a defensive driver and watch for folks like this on the road. Be alert, don’t twitter, yak on the cellphone, fool with the stereo. Had she headed straight onto the southbound lanes it would have been bad…really bad.
Putting journalists back to work
Sunday, December 14th, 2008On The Media this past week floated the idea of bringing back theĀ Work Progress Administration’s Federal Writers’ Project which happened during the Great Depression. During the 1930s’ writers documented what was happening in America during the Great Depression. We’re talking Studs Terkel and John Steinbeck being two of the many writers who participated in the project.
At the same time the Farm Security Administration hired photographers like Dorothea Lange and Gordon Parks. Parks is the one of the original LIFE Magazine photographers and he directed the movie Shaft.
The interview on the show featuredĀ The New Republic’s Mark Pinsky talking about the possibility of the resurrection of a new version of the Federal program. It’s an interesting idea but with so many in the public dismayed by the media these days I don’t think taxpayers would be happy funding it if they think of TV and tabloid journalism covering Britney Spears or Amy Winehouse.
What’s in a name?
Thursday, December 4th, 2008I guess I should state for the record that Hawaii247.com is NOT a blog.
Yes it uses a CMS, Content Management System, (i.e. WordPress, Drupal, PHPWebSite, etc) to publish but Hawaii247.com contains content by many authors. Typically a blog is used by an individual to post things, most popularly a personal journal, a photo album, increasingly often mixed media of text, graphics, photos, audio, video, etc. We have Dave Winer to thank for much of the weblog’s heritage along with podcasting and CMS such as Frontier (man, I tried really hard to learn Frontier long ago).
What you’re reading now, yeah THIS stuff, THIS is a blog. Nobody else is going to write in this space except for me, or if someone does hopefully they’ll identify themselves.
I just wanted to clear that up. Note that CMS can be used for many wonderful things, not just blogs and not just news websites. People have been using them as storefronts, novels, tutorials, community and corporate websites, it’s endless.
So when you see someone using the tools that are popular with bloggers just remember, not everything is a blog. Don’t confuse the tool with the end product. After all, I think of the countless times I’ve used a ‘rice paddle’ to dish ice cream into a bowl, yet I wouldn’t call Bunny Tracks ice cream ‘rice.’
For those who missed it, here’s a link to a newsletter story I wrote for SportsShooter.com
