Grill Assembly
Got a call from Glennon, his buddy Fritz (that’s him in the photo) was over with a cooler full of steaks brought from the mainland, Iowa (not Omaha steaks). So both of them spent the afternoon (and evening) trying to find the perfect grill. They found a suitable grill, not quite the Weber they wanted but that was impossible to find, it required some major assembly. I had to shoot this photo as it looked like a dad trying to assemble his kid’s bike on Christmas eve with the instructions in Chinese.

Grill Instructions
Here are the instructions, some of the parts and it even comes with tools. They had to even put on wheels and hubcaps on this thing. Way more complicated that it should be when there’s a bunch of steaks to grill and hungry guys.

BBQ Fire
They finally got it together and grilled up a bunch of steaks for a late night steakfest with a bunch of us. Gonna have to put it to use again as we’ve still got a bunch of steaks.

faces
Quiz time. Can someone tell me where this neglected artwork of faces is? Bonus points for who the artist is (to tell you the truth, I don’t know who the artist is).

Garage Sale - 1 click down the road

Saturday, September 30th, 2006

I’m having a virtual garage sale by putting a bunch of items on Ebay. Camera gear, computer stuff, etc. Get it now while it lasts.

I already listed my old Sony TV for free on Craigslist and it’s been spoken for.

R.I.P. Bob Krauss

Sunday, September 24th, 2006

Longtime Honolulu Advertiser writer Bob Krauss passed away on September 10th and his service was today on Oahu. I interned as a staff photographer at the Honolulu Advertiser and worked with Bob a few times and it was always great to talk story with him.

I had asked him what his most memorable story/assignment was while at the ‘Tiser and immediately he said it was being sent to Vietnam during the war. Bob said, “I was in a foxhole, covered with mud with bugs crawling up my ass.” He said photographers like Take Umeda (T. Umeda in his photo credits) also went to Vietnam to cover the war with him amongst other staff members. He said this while laughing as he relived the memory and shook his head in a slight disbelief that he had done that.

If you’ve enjoyed his writing you would have enjoyed shooting the breeze with Bob, I was lucky enough to have had a few opportunities to do that.

TS for us

Here’s what this bad boy looked like a few days ago.

Tropical Storm Daniel (downgraded from a hurricane tonight) is headed straight for the Big Island. We can probably expect rain, wind and ocean surge.

Lots of people are under the mistaken impression that Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa protects us from hurricanes but that’s not true. These storm systems are so big it’s like a Hummer barrelling over a rock in the road.

Be prepared for power outages. In my experience the outages don’t directly come from the storms, they come from cars hitting utility poles from driving on the wet roads.

I’m melting….

Got to the new office space up north to test out the network connections and I found a big puddle of water under a table and the mini fridge. It had been raining like crazy recently, could a leak be the cause? The table has some five-gallon bottles of water under them, could one have leaked and been the cause?

Mystery solved, the power strip on the left was accidently turned off so the fridge, which probably had over a year’s worth of frost built-up in the freezer section defrosted overnight causing the flood of water. So I got to play janitor and clean it all up, good thing we don’t have a union or I’d have to wait around for a cleaning crew huh?

Oh, and the network connection? It worked fine when I tested it later.
