Children’s Day streamers

Carp streamers were flying above Kona Hongwanji Mission in Kealakekua. May 5th is celebrated as Children’s Day in Japan (and Hawaii). Previously known as Boys Day it was renamed Children’s Day in 1948. The carps are usually flown at homes with each carp representing a male living in the home with the biggest carp being the father.

May 5th may have a Japanese twist for us as well. Plans are for going to a sushi bar before celebrating Mexico’s liberation from the French on Cinco de Mayo. Okay, we’re going out for a few drinks but Cinco de Mayo is a good excuse.
