How fast are you?

Speed Test
The above is the speed of my connection. I’m using an Earthlink Cable Modem via a WiFi router.

How fast is your connection and what is your provider? Cable? DSL? Dial-Up..gasp… Often telephone companies selling DSL services will say, “DSL always has high speed, cable is dependent upon how many people are using the internet via cable so they can’t guarantee you’re going to get high speeds.” Theoretically this is true since cable bandwidth is shared, but here on the Big Island we don’t have 40 story highrise buildings chock-full of people sharing the bandwidth pipe. So I’ve usually found cable to be pretty darn fast here.

Check it out here and report back in the comments.

What a difference, this is my test results today going through the San Francisco server.

*UPDATE* An even more funner (is that a word?) speed test, much more graphic is here at SpeedTest.

Yup, with cable the upload is pretty much always slower than the download.

I have one friend in New Jersey that pays for broadband internet that comes over the powerline and not telephone or cable. He gets about 3Mbps download AND upload speeds and only pays $30/month.

How about it Mela? Some powerline internet love for the Big Island?

Hell, if/when BPL (Broadband over PowerLine) is made available commercially, you can bet that I am gonna be the first in line for it!!

Last I've heard at work was maybe a year ago; at that point BPL was in more of a R&D phase and they were focusing on business-related applications, i.e. getting meter usage readings for remote areas like HOVE (which is currently using turtle meter technology). From what I understand, there were at least a couple homes that have BPL hooked up for testing. I haven't heard anything different since.
